Canvas is Verizon’s enterprise design system and compliance team. In May 2020, Canvas hosted their first hackathon which had 27 competing teams. One UX designer lead each team with 3-4 full stack developers. The hackathon judges were looking for a new sign in screen for their Canvas application.

I lead Team Mosaic and were runners up in the event. The image above is a GIF of the functional prototype. I led the team using quick design thinking (Stanford Model) and each person contributed in ideation.

Verizon is an American multinational telecommunications conglomerate and a corporate component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Verizon is the largest wireless communications service provider in the US and is also a large telecommunications company that was one of the seven ‘Baby Bells’ that was formed following a lawsuit involving AT&T and the US Department of Justice.

Under the direction of the executive director, Verizon wanted a way to use latest technology to equip technicians with augmented reality and virtual reality devices. It was showcased in a technology event within Verizon’s Basking Ridge location. The idea was to show locations of manholes, poles, terminals, etc within standing range. If those items are obstructed from view such as in the case of snow, technicians will still be able to easily identify the correct location of the item.

Verizon’s Optix software is used by customer support or engineers to identify problems within a FIOS connection for a home or office. This project joined both lead network engineers and users to use machine learning tool. Based on the initial system of checks the software could identify if it was a common problem or a complex one where the two panels would open up. To make the interface easier to use, a system of icons were created. The larger icon was the device or network and the smaller icon on the lower right was the action.

GRM managed sister company Mana Contemporary and Evolve Motorcycles. When in need lead designers are allocated to the sister companies to brand and market their services. In all designs, a grid was applied and proportions were taken into account based on the device. Sticking to a branding style was essential for quick recognition and remembrance.

The Global CoFEE (Converged Front End Engine) UUI 2.0 project was designed to connect 29+ applications into one standard interface for the network engineering side. This involved many lead engineers in Verizon to make compromises in order to suit one common interface and use familiar methods to completing tasks.

The Wall Street Journal is a U.S. business-focused, English-language international daily newspaper based in New York City. The Journal, along with its Asian and European editions, is published six days a week by Dow Jones & Company, a division of News Corp.

Weekend section of The Wall Street Journal allowed the most creativity where the entire page was dedicated to an illustration or infographic to the main story. Similar to illustrations, the art director would sketch or compose a design and the imaging specialist would complete the finish design. Most times copy would start on this page and the need for clever text space was needed.

Secondary task but most rewarding was to create illustrations for the newspaper and online. Art directors would ask for a particular design that was roughly sketched or photo composed and it was up to the digital imaging specialist to execute the design.

Graphic arts has been a passion of mine and often I’ve created art for self promotion. Compositing photos that follow a sketch is a great skill and can be done quickly if you maintain assets such as templates, brushes, and Photoshop actions. My designs are inspired by art history’s great discoveries such as chiaroscuro, grids, perspective, balance, proportion, etc.
